I think this kid is amazing.
I walked into my office and overheard an interview on the radio. I didn't know who was being interviewed, but I was intrigued at the sound of a child's voice whose vernacular matched that of the interviewer herself. I thought that either this was an adult woman with a childlike voice, or a really well-spoken kid.
It was Nico Calabria--a 13 year old boy, born with one leg, who had just summitted Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise money for an organization that supplies wheelchairs to developing countries. His climb managed a whopping $53,000 towards this project.
Nico looks a questioner in the eye during an interview, not appearing nervous in the least, and considers each query at length. When he answers, it is in complete sentences that contain words like "acclimatize," and that are devoid of the standard teenage "like," "um," or "you know."
You can read the rest of the story here, or listen to the NPR interview here.
Thanks Bossa, this is exactly what I needed at this precise moment in time.
